Plumbing Emergency 101: What To Do While You Wait

Plumbing emergencies don’t wait for convenient timing in Westchester County. KNJ Plumbing & Heating helps homeowners respond fast and limit damage when pipes burst, drains overflow, or water appears where it shouldn’t. The right actions in the first few minutes of a plumbing emergency can prevent thousands of dollars in repairs.

Shut Off the Water Immediately

The first move is always the same. Stop the water. Locate your main shutoff valve and turn it clockwise until it stops. If the issue affects a single fixture, shut off the local valve instead. Cutting water flow limits flooding and buys you time.

Turn Off the Water Heater

If a major leak or burst pipe occurs, turn off your water heater. Running a heater without water can damage the tank or heating elements. For gas units, switch the control to “off.” For electric units, shut off power at the breaker.

Contain the Water

Use towels, buckets, or a wet vacuum to prevent water from spreading. Move furniture, rugs, and electronics out of harm’s way. The goal is damage control, not a perfect cleanup. Every minute counts during active leaks.

Avoid Quick Fixes That Make Things Worse

Don’t use chemical drain cleaners during a backup. They can damage pipes and create hazards for technicians. Avoid overtightening fittings or forcing valves. Temporary tape or clamps may help only if you know what you’re doing.

Watch for Safety Hazards

Standing water near electrical outlets creates a serious risk. Stay clear of affected areas and shut off power if needed. If you smell gas, leave the home immediately and call your utility provider. Never attempt repairs involving gas lines.

Call a Professional Right Away

Plumbing emergencies require licensed expertise. The sooner a professional arrives, the less damage your home will suffer. Describe the issue clearly and follow instructions while help is on the way.

Emergencies test preparation and calm thinking. Knowing what to do protects your home and reduces stress.
